Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is a professional, experiential, somatic, holistic approach to mental health that supports participants of all ages in addressing emotional, cognitive, behavioural, relationship and mental health conditions, with horses as assistants, supports and co-facilitators in this process. Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is offered by registered practitioners and goverened by their registered body.
The horses are sentient beings that we can learn from, as they are 100% in the moment, physically, mentally and emotionally. By observing the horse, we can gain insight into our own lives and obtain wisdom about living in the moment which we can apply to every aspect of our day to day lives.
Sessions are structured using an I-Thou approach along with person centered counselling techniques and experiential self exploration framework.

What do I need to Know about Equine-Assisted Sessions?
- You do not need any horse experience.
- Sessions are not a riding lesson, although some sessions may be led mounted.
- Sessions are held out side, closed in shoes and a hat and some water are needed.
- Work within your capacity.
- Supported by a fully qualified practitioner.

What can happen in an Equine-Assisted Sessions?
Clients are offered ‘safe’ (physically and emotionally) experiences with horses
self-experience in relationship, building self-awareness, along with awareness of patterns/habits that are no-longer serving them, developing psychological and social skills and
addressing therapeutic goals clients have identified.

- Observation of horses
- Meeting with horses at liberty (no equipement)
- Lead-line experiences including touching, grooming,
- Liberty leading (leading horses without a lead rope)
